BENTFORMS designs a Ramp
Mat Citrenbaum of BENTFORMS was called on to design and oversee production of a ramp for the disabled at the Abington Art Center.
"As it was to be built in an artistic setting," Mat explains, "the ramp had to be architecturally and aesthetically pleasing. Located in the main gallery, it also had to compliment the existing entrance point into the room without altering the traffic flow."
Mat started by making foam board models and multiple designs. In the approved design, the ramp portion mimicks the existing curve in the wall and the stepped portion is an extension of the existing traffic flow. The surface was planned to be done in hard wood flooring to match the gallery space, but with the help of youth volunteers under the direction of Carol Stirton-Broad, the entire surface was done in a tile mosaic turning it into a stunning work of art.
